Here's a good site for shot diameters 4lbs and up.

http://www.ontrackandfield.com/main/catalog/2004/page06.html

I didn't realize the 4lbers were so much cheaper than the 3lbers. They must be a real specialty item. I wish I could find the place that had the diameter for 3lb shots.

At 7", I'm not sure if my hands could hold 2 4lb 80mm (3 1/8") shots. I know wood balls of this size are feasible for me. Ironmind's website says John Brookfield has worked up to 2 6lb shots as well.

A 6lb shot has a diameter of 91mm or 3 9/16"

If you are interested in making some balls yourself, sometime ago I purchased a couple of Franklin Street hockey balls at Dicks Sporting Goods, they measure 2.5 inches diameter. I drilled a hole in each one, filled them with lead shot, covered the hole with tape-1.5 lbs each. You can probably find larger balls to use, but for starting out these work fine.

The 3lb shot has a diameter of 2.84 inches.

(Measurement quoted to me by a VS athletics associate)

I have one of their 24lb ironshot like the one pictured and it is nice quality with a

very smooth surface. As close to a polished surface as it can get.

So I can vouch for the quality

I bought a pair of the 3 lb. Special Olympics shotputs. The grey paint on them was pretty lousy; it flaked, and there was a lot of rust underneath. I obtained some PeelAway 6 from Dumond Chemicals and removed the crappy paint. Then I sanded off most of the surface rust. Next I applied Rust Reformer from Rust-Oleum, which seems to be a combination of blueing compound and paint. This gave the balls an attractive black coat. I let that dry for a couple of days and then sprayed them with a few coats of Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel. Now they are black, shiny, and rarely chip or flake, and when they do, I just squirt them with another coat of the enamel and they are back in service in 12 hours. I've also found that a cap from a Perrier bottle makes a great little "cake stand" to prop your ball on while you're painting it.

Special Olympics shotput ... the only sporting event where the spectators are required to wear helmets. :)

Pics of the 6lb shots are in my gallery for those who are interested in the size.

It's actually alot easier than it looks. They move pretty easily, it's just keeping them in your hand that's the tricky part.

I just got Brookfields dexterity ball course. In it he actually claims to use shots as heavy as 8lbs for rotations. The ones he shows in his hand are also covered in duct tape.

I think 8lbs would be doable, but just barely. The duct tape is great too, it really increases the friction and makes the movement more difficult.
