Chez
On my lunch break I walked to a local hardware store looking for bending stock. I bought some 6 inch long 1/4 inch thick bolts with no markings on the head. The guy knew nothing about them. Are all bolts with no markings Grade 2 bolts or could they be something else.Just curious. Still going to bend them either way since its hard to find 6 inch bolts in a local hardware store. The other stores only had 4 inch long ones.
acorn
Those would be Grade 2.
bwwm
Chez - not all grade 2's are the same either. You could end up with harder ones or easier ones depending on who made them. I bought some grade 2's of that size from a big box, and they were super easy because they weren't actually 1/4" on the shaft, but they thread a 1/4" nut. I now have some grade 5's and grade 8's from the local hardware store. Those are 1/4" on the shaft, and a b#$% to bend. I managed to wobble a grade 5 a bit, but that's been about it. The grade 5's have 3 marks on them. The grade 8's have 6 marks on them.
Chez
thanks guys. I got a buddy coming over to train on Sunday. You guys know of anything I can find at a hardware store between a green and yellow. My friend is just starting out in grip and might bring another friend. I'm afraid everything I got might be too difficult for them.
Chez
actually I think a grade 2 is between a green and yellow right?
daniel reinard
yup. steel varies. Those are Grade 2s. They can be in a range of difficulty. The thicker the steel the more the difficulty can vary too, so keep that in mind as you climb the ladder. For your bud you can get 1/4" CRS round sticks and cut him a longer length to make it easier. Chez, when you find yourself wanting more options drill rod is sold in tiny increments. O-1 is the stuff you want. Fastenal sells it, or can order it for you. Chez
Thanks dude. I'll see what he can do with the grade 2s and timber ties. I think anyone with some strength training experience makes quick work of a green and white so its hard finding something that will give him a challenge but not discourage him. daniel reinard
also a plain 60d nail is gonna be tougher than a 60d timber tie. and 60d nails vary like crazy. try different stores. you may find a challenging supply.
xvx
I've found the FH brand grade 2 bolts to be very easy compared to all of the 1/4 bolts and stock that I have tried so far. The Lowes up the street from me used to carry them all of the time, so check while you're at the store and if they have any you should check those out.
