Off With It's Head

Is the tighter wrap you can get by cutting the heads off bolts worth the increase in difficulty from the reduction in length you get by doing it?

It is for me too. But i also have found that if there is a hole in the wrap where the head sits, i can still wrap it just as tight as i can without the head. It took a little bit to form these holes but they help me know.

I also saw someone post a pic a couple of months ago of how they cut a slot in the wrap on the end where the head can fit. I think that is a good idea and one i may try next.

I seem to do better with the head, but my wraps are moderate in thickness and I don't go to any great lengths to get them super tight.

i never tried them without the head because i like the trophy with the head:-) :D

Aaron , Perry ... just to name a few told me once to put a lot of chalk in the head of the bolt and / or to cut the wraps to your advantage(to make the bolt tighter).hope it helps.

I've never cut the head off a bolt, seems wrong somehow.

I like to keep them on. It looks cooler and I don't have to bend it quite as far to get within 2" (since you can measure from the edge of the head). I do the old cut a slot in the wraps for about 2" and I'm able to get a good wrap on the bolts/nails. If I need to cut a bolt down I'll trim off the threads since they're more likely to snap or bend.
