Teemu I
All the politics aside, at least all this heat around Vbar gets more people interested about it. I have to get one too. I like the fact that hand size doesn't matter much, if at all.
imodnar_
There's a 25mm vertical bar in finnish grip contest. Record is currently 172kg.
Mikael Siversson
There's a 25mm vertical bar in finnish grip contest. Record is currently 172kg. Why not making the Finnish results a bit more official by joining the rest of us by adhering to standard rules and use a LGC vbar replica? We have a standing invitation for the Åland guys to compete in the LGC competition but none has come over yet.
imodnar_
Well the finnish grip contest called "rautakoura" (iron hand) has been around for about 9 years. The contests are open for anyone who likes to try, not just grip trainers or strength trainers. The record of 172 kg is actually from 1999. Also there are a lot of events (new ones include grippers and steel bending), mostly support grip events with specific devices. The 75kg farmers hold is however the main event of the contest. Very interesting man. Cool that it's been around for 9 years too. Surprised I haven't heard of it yet.

All grip competitions are open to anyone. It's not like we'd turn people away. However, why only 75-kilos? Most strongman farmers bells start at 90-kilos with the heavy ones being 125-kilos and up. Also, as David Horne will confirm, the longest well-known grip competion - to the best of my knowlege is David's. First under the auspices of the IAWA (there is also a USAWA with some grip records) and later on his British Iron Grip (as opposed to Iron Hand). I'm pretty sure we're looking at 15 plus years (I'm checking wioth DH right now on MSN). Edited May 5, 2006 by mobsterone

imodnar_
Well the record with 75kg farmer in each hand is little over 4 minutes. website http://www.rautakoura.com
Mikael Siversson
Why not send over the best guy to the next LGC competition? It will about as difficult to win this competition as it will be to win the 2006 European Grip Championship, as Martin appears to be stronger than ever. There are many interesting events that test grip strength/endurance with different devices in different ways. I haven't competed yet myself, as I'm currently not versatile enough, but I intend to do that in the future.
Mikael Siversson
Somehow we ended up discussing Finnish grip strength competitions in an original thread on American vbar lifting.
Hubgeezer
Somehow we ended up discussing Finnish grip strength competitions in an original thread on American vbar lifting. That's okay with me. When I started it, I wanted a catchy name. In retrospect, it should have been called something like "The Vbar: Interest and Numbers on the Rise". I bet no one is happier than John Beatty about the discussion. Hubgeezer
