Only Thick Bar Work...

So, today i started collecting steel bars and makind thick bars and and dumbbells, once i make them all i will train all the basic movements with thick bars and dumbbells as mr.kubik recomends and see my progress. To other handles i will add the padd which all trainees use to squat and see how it goes.i have two choices: 1) train with my thick bars plus training with grippers three times a week as usual or 2) train with my thick bars and forget the grippers and every crushing exercise for a while just to see my progress. What is your opinion?

It's your body and therefore your call. Personally I might leave grippers behind for a short six week trial but if grippers are on your to do list, by all means.

More for my personal, selfish wants; will you keep a log here on gripboard?

I'd suggest backing off of the grippers for a coule weeks and then slowly increasing the volume/frequency to a comfortable level. You don't want to over work yourself into an injury.

In the short term, thickbar stuff may hurt your gripper strength. In the long run though, it will likely help it, in my opinion.

If that makes any sense.

I Must start keeping a training log with all my training sessions it is a great deal , it motivates you and you can surely see your progress to each and every exercise you do.Soon.I believe that the thick bar work will help me with my crushing and both my supporting! In terms of time when do you believe that i will begin to see results ?

The other two have been at this a lot longer than me but....

Depends on the results:

I think if you try to close a gripper after your first thickbar workout, it will seem harder.

I think your arms will hurt in a new kind of way the day after.

I think the weekk or two after, you will notice your wide grip has improved dramatically.

I think it may be some time before you see a gripper improvement, if at all. Maybe 6 weeks.

Oldtimers didn't have much choise: heavy weights meant using thick bars. Yet many of them were seriously strong all over. I don't think they even thought of "how much of their other development is sacrificed" if using thick bars.

My view on functional training is such that if I can't lift the desired object because I can't get a grip on it, then it's too much weight for me and I just have to get stronger. That approach doesn't leave any questionmarks whether my development is balanced or not in the long run.

I got inspired going that way by seeing how freakishly strong all over my late father was. He was a farmer and a lumberjack, and he could snatch 70 kg (154 pounds) barbell with one arm just two months after surgery that he went through because of cancer. He was 44 years old then and died two years later. But that's a different story: my point is that he got stronger by "accident" than most modern gym rats will ever become on purpose, he had a grip to be afraid of and he surely didn't have his back or leg strength development compromized, even though most of the heavy objects and stuff he had carried or lifted over the years since he was 12-year old were hard to grip. How about carrying two 40kg bags of grain under BOTH armpits for 50 meters? Thats 160kg (352 pounds) total and THAT requires some serious strength all over and grip strength sure has to be good. My father did that and if anybody doubts it I couldn't care less.

These are the reasons I didn't hesitate to start sandbag training when I read about it first time. I think you can get seriously strong all over using thick bar in all your training as well. What stops you if you put all your efforts into it?

Teemu_I i tottaly agree with you! Functional strength for me is everything.I first bought the grippers to make my grip stronger. Some i believe buy and train grippers and other stuff just for the captain of crush title.I wish someday i can crush the #4 , and it doesn't matter if i get certified or not.I woud know that i had the capability and strength to close it.Funtcional strength is everything i believe. My friend teemu_i i wish i could work here in greece as a lumberjack.....tremendous training for all the upper body....Amazing results.

Starkmann why you think that i will see no improvement at all at grippers? if i train with 2'' 2.5'' and 3'' fatbars would not this be the best carryover for grippers?

Blackheart I truly support your views on this. Just go get that strength! I'm sure you will develop a very good strength base with that thick bar training. You can throw in some heavy gripper work occasionally to transform your acquired strength into that specific form. Grippers are overrated by many who begin their grip training (and even by advanced grip specialists), there are many ways to build grip as good as and even better than grippers.

I don't mean that it's WRONG to be excited about grippers and training with them, I like them very much indeed myself! Maybe I'm guilty of overrating them myself. To each of it own, if you just want to close harder grippers that's just fine. But to build all around functional strength and good grip strength as a "side product", thick bars are very good.

So until the next weekend i should have constructed a pair of 2'' dumbbells and a 2'' barbell, and with the other machinery in he gym i will use foam padding from the pad we use for squats.Immediately then, i will start keeping my log here in the gripboard!!!
